Anniversary of the Morocco-USA-Israel tripartite agreement: the Sahara first

Kiosk 360. The expectations of each of the signatories to this agreement differ. For Morocco, the priority is its national cause. From Israel, Morocco is expected to further accelerate the implementation of this agreement as well as a full embassy. The details in this press review taken from the daily Assabah

It has been a year since former Head of Government Saad-Eddine El Othmani, Meir Ben-Shabbat, National Security Advisor to the State of Israel, and Jared Kushner, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States of America , signed a joint tripartite declaration in Rabat. According to the terms of this declaration, the United States recognizes the full Moroccan character of the Saharan provinces and assures Morocco of their support for its autonomy proposal, recalls the daily. Assabah in an analysis devoted to the subject, in its issue of Monday, December 27.

A year later, despite the institutional change at the level of each of the three countries – Morocco, Israel and the United States having experienced legislative and presidential elections which brought new teams to the helm – the signatories of the declaration held to apply the terms each at their own pace.

Thus, the implementation of the clauses of this agreement was not done in the same way and with the same intensity. Also, underlines the daily, Morocco expects more involvement from the United States today to put a definitive end to the conflict created around the Moroccan Sahara.

The Kingdom, notes the daily, hopes that this issue will be closed once and for all thanks to firm and frank support from the United States at the level of the UN and its Security Council. At a time when the military junta in power in Algeria scrambles to support militarily and diplomatically, with all the energy of which it is capable, the separatists of the Polisario, at the same time perpetuating this conflict, Morocco expects the American administration to enhance the level of its unconditional support for the Kingdom.

For his part, continues Assabah, The State of Israel expects Morocco to review its attitude and no longer be satisfied with small steps towards total normalization. The Jewish state expects the Kingdom to implement all the clauses of this agreement, including the raising of the level of diplomatic representation. Instead of a simple liaison office, Israel is impatient to see a full embassy opened in each of the two countries. The Israelis also want more official visits from the two sides, more immediately executable agreements and the acceleration of commercial, industrial, cultural, scientific and human exchanges between the two countries.

As for Morocco’s expectations of its Israeli partner, they mainly concern its national cause. The Kingdom hopes that by activating its lobbies and pressure groups around the world, the Jewish state can actively and effectively help it put an end to this conflict around its Saharan territory. The Kingdom also hopes to see Israeli and American companies invest more in the country, mainly in the Saharan provinces where a considerable effort has been deployed over the years, particularly in terms of infrastructure to accommodate investments.

Having said that, notes the daily, if there is one area where relations between the three countries have made remarkable progress, it is military cooperation. There is no need to go back on the already very close and strategic relations between Morocco and the United States at this level. The novelty of this year is this agreement that Morocco and Israel have just signed in the military field. An agreement which covers the military, security and intelligence fields at the same time, recalls the daily. A historic agreement which had the immediate effect of generating panic among the eastern neighbor’s military regime.
