In an interview with the Lebanese magazine “Iqtissad wal Al Aamal”, extracts of which are published by the Arabic-language general news daily, published in London, ” Al Quds Al Arabi », Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani, who is preparing to pay a visit to Algiers, reiterated his offer of mediation between Morocco and Algeria, which broke off their diplomatic relations last summer on the initiative from Algiers.
“It is unimaginable the magnitude of the cost that the peoples of the region are paying because of the failure of a strong, efficient and integrated Maghreb union. We are aware of the difficulties encountered by this dream and we regret the obstacles which stand in its way “, lamented the Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani, expressing” his deep concern in the face of the factors of tension which appear from time to time in the world. Maghreb ”.
This is part of the responses of the Mauritanian Head of State in the long interview he gave to the Lebanese magazine “Iqtissad wal Al Aamal”, extracts of which were taken up by the Arabic-language general news daily, published in London, ” Al Quds Al Arabi ”. “Mauritania is always ready to play a major role in restoring cohesion between the Maghreb countries”, he affirmed. And to continue: “Our hope is that the day will come when the Arab Maghreb Union will return thanks to the will of its leaders and their ability to contain the differences and achieve the desired integration, to achieve the will of the peoples, and to also embody the dreams of the founding fathers ”.
This is not the first time that Mauritania has attempted mediation between Morocco and Algeria. Indeed, during another interview given last October to French daily L’Opinion, Ould El Ghazouani had expressed his willingness to play “a facilitating role” between the two countries.
Also last August, the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, addressed the situation in the Maghreb, during two separate telephone interviews on August 30, with his Moroccan counterparts Nasser Bourita and Algerian Ramtane Lamamra. “We are concerned about the current situation and do not want it to deteriorate further. Everything that affects the peoples of the Maghreb affects Mauritania ”, lamented Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, while stressing that“ we are sure that whatever the crises and whatever they reach, there will be a solution ”.
Note that this mediation offer has no chance of success according to several experts in international relations. Indeed, until then, Algeria has categorically rejected the mediation of many Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia.
However, Ould El Ghazouani will always be able to try his luck with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who, according to the Mauritanian press, should pay a visit to Algeria next week.
It must be said that since it unilaterally broke off its relations with the Kingdom, Algeria is seeking opportunities to get closer to other Maghreb countries against Morocco’s strategic interests. It is in this context that Tebboune made a two-day visit to Tunisia on December 15, his first since he has led the country. And he did not hesitate to grant a loan of 300 million dollars, a year after a deposit of 150 million dollars at the Central Bank of Tunisia. As with Tunisia, facing economic problems and which since the end of July 2021 has been living in prolonged institutional chaos and a democratic vacuum after the suspension by the Tunisian President, Kaïs Saïd, of the National Assembly, which represents the Tunisian people, the Algerian politico-military regime, will try to “corrupt” Mauritania, according to experts in international relations.
