MRE, patriots against all odds!

In a context of global economic and geopolitical crisis, galloping inflation, and increasingly growing hostilities from the enemies of our development and our territorial integrity, Morocco must mobilize all Moroccans, here and abroad. ‘somewhere else.

Often reduced by certain economic readings to annual flows of foreign currency, or to a simple tourist windfall, Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) constantly remind us that they are above all Moroccans in their own right, Moroccans in the soul and inveterate patriots.

Whether it concerns our deep identity or our supreme interests (Moroccan Sahara, etc.), they constitute both our vanguard and our sentinel in the great battles that our nation is called upon to wage on the international scene, and especially European. And this, even though the Moroccan governments and parliaments that have followed one another since the 2011 Constitution still refuse to grant them some of their most basic rights, such as that of voting.

These Moroccans against all odds not only invest in Morocco, but they also often nurture the sweet dream of one day being able to return to their motherland and participate in its development and prosperity.

However, this picture by many idyllic aspects very often comes up against major obstacles. Since many MRE who dared to cross this Rubicon were very quickly overtaken by reality which, for once, is far from the image of Epinal of a welcoming Morocco overflowing with opportunities.

Patronage, real estate spoliation, corruption, administrative obstacles and rent situations end up in many cases being right in the resolution of the most daring of MREs. Some succeed despite these obstacles, of course. But how many give up and are definitely disgusted by their unfortunate experiences? The question deserves to be asked, and above all to be quantified.

Remember that all these obstacles have been repeatedly pointed out by His Majesty the King through several speeches. Whether it is property spoliation, administrative obstacles or rentier logic, the royal will has always been for a change of paradigm and for in-depth reforms. But for the various governments, political politics ultimately boils down to: “I vote therefore I exist”. No vote, no serious consideration of their issues.

However, the watchword was once again given by the King on August 20, through his speech addressed to the Nation on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People, in these terms: “ With regard to the involvement of the MRE community in the development process – a goal in which We attach particular interest – it is clear that Morocco needs all its children and all the skills established at the foreign.”

“The time has therefore come to provide this community with the necessary framework as well as the means and conditions so that it gives the best of itself, in the well-understood interest of its country and its development.”

The government is therefore called upon to put in place the necessary framework for the inclusion of MREs in the country’s development process.

This time, the margin of error is almost non-existent. Because in a context of global economic and geopolitical crisis, galloping inflation, and increasingly growing hostilities from the enemies of our development and our territorial integrity, Morocco must mobilize all Moroccans, from here and Besides. Special interests, political politics, shopping calculations and rent-seeking situations cannot slow down, block or thwart this royal orientation. Our sovereignty and our development are at stake in an increasingly unstable and hostile regional context.

Consequently, the people will have to work hand in hand with the King, in order to ensure the successful completion of this project. Whether we are abroad or in Morocco, each of us will have to become a sentinel of our success and our sovereignty. And any opposition to this dynamic should in many ways be qualified as sabotage, even treason!
