Reform, status of teachers, tech … The start of the academic year explained by Abdellatif Miraoui

VideoThe government has just reassured teacher-researchers by declaring that it is working hard with the supervisory ministry and the unions to reach a compromise aimed at reforming the status of these teachers.

“The reform of this status is no longer debatable, the agreement remains to be finalized”, declared, this Tuesday, September 20, 2022, the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui , in an interview with Le360.

“The climate between the most representative unions, the ministry and the teachers, including the researchers, is imbued with serenity, seriousness, and the dialogue continues to arrive at an early solution,” said the minister. Abdellatif Miraoui spoke in response to certain strike threats attributed to a union close to the Islamists of the PJD and Al Adl Wal Ihssane (radical Islamists).

“Relations with the unions are very good and our dialogue is marked by frankness and seriousness. We are all working to reach a final agreement on a new status through arbitration by the head of government”, hammered the minister, brushing aside the risks of a walkout and ensuring that the start of the 2022-2023 academic year will take place. takes place under “good conditions”.

“We recorded a 6% increase in enrollment compared to the previous academic year, all cycles combined, between the public and private sectors. Total enrollment therefore stands at 1.238 million students, including 1.1 million for the public (faculties and open access).

For the Minister, the research professors believe that today “we must seize the opportunity to restore weight and prestige to Moroccan universities. The unions want to pursue the dialogue wisely”. However, he cautioned that one should not go overboard “with this type of disruption”.

“We are seeing student enthusiasm and a desire to deepen knowledge, and university managers will have to set the example”. In this regard, he launched an urgent appeal to all research professors, because, said Abdellatif Miraoui, “I am myself a research professor and I do not think that they will be able to leave our students without teaching. And I thank all the actors, the presidents, the deans, the professors who act with seriousness and abnegation”.

The reform of the statute is “indisputable, because the grievances do not date from yesterday”, concluded the minister.
